Spacey

I picked the first of our cosmic carrots, which are growing into monsters in the garden, to use in a chicken potpie recipe.

To give you some perspective on just how big they are, this is after I topped it and trimmed off the baby rootlets.

Also, a light bulb went off for me when I was thinking about water storage for hurricane season. This was because I'd just seen the prices for official water storage containers, which are beyond ridiculous, and most of what's out there is cheap and flimsy. So I was in the sewing room moving the tote of thrifted fabric when I happened to look at the label on the side. 66 quarts is 16.5 gallons, right? And I probably have twenty or thirty of these nice, sturdy plastic bins with locking lids from my spring clean last year; they're sitting in the garage. They're perfect, no cracks, and a snap to wash out. I can even double what I have if I emptied my fabric stash out of the ones in the closet.

So here's how I think they'd work best: take the empty & clean storage tote into your bathroom, kitchen or wherever you want to use it. That's where you fill it with water and keep it with the lid on. Then after the power goes out, just take the lid off and use a smaller container or jug to take how much water you want from it. If you think you'll need a lot of water, then keep them in your garage or shed (I would not stack them) and fill them all up before a storm. Pretty smart, huh? :)

Goodwill Gamble #2 Arrives

My second Goodwill gamble arrived; this is one I paid ten bucks for last month. Just inside the lid was a big roll of plastic mesh that I think is for latchhook work. In the auction listing it looked like fabric to me, so that was unexpected. Someone at the seller's end was nice enough to put a note on this pinned fabric. I'll put on my gloves before I take it out to inspect it. The embroidered green fabric turned out to be 1-1/2 yards of sequinned and three-dimensional designer fabric. I'll guess this cost somewhere between $20.00 to $30.00 a yard, and it's in pristine condition. But here's a shot of everything in the lot, which is mostly crafty odds and ends with a small amount of cotton fabrics, a large amount of synethetic fabrics, and some other surprises. The original owner of these was probably a Catholic school teacher; these beads, crosses and medallions are the kind of rosary kits for kids to make at Sunday school or Bible camp (and s...

Love Means This

Invested in a couple of hand-dyed bundles from one of my favorite fabric artists. This one said "Make me into something for Valentine's Day." So I went for a quilted and embellished tote. I kept thinking about what love means to me as I worked on it. Here's the finished tote. Although I was tempted to embellish with beads and pins, I got sick and only felt well enough to do a little stitching every night. As I worked I thought about how often love seems disappointing to us, especially when it fails to live up to our expectations. But now that I've experienced love in many forms, I can say that it's made me a better person than I might have been without it. Love is a precious thing, and should be appreciated in all its forms. I am very grateful for the love of my guy, my child and my friends who have stuck with me all these years. That's you two, in case you're wondering. :) Also finally found something to do with a ve...

B. Dalton, How I Miss Ye

While Kat was visiting we went one night to walk a mall that I haven't personally visited in about ten years, and there was still a B. Dalton bookstore there. So of course I had to buy something! Ha. In keeping with my old lady love of everything cute I invested in this crochet kit that makes two puppies. Go ahead, snicker. I could instead be fond of explosives, and then a lot of people would be in trouble. Also impossible to resist: the winter issue of Greencraft magazine. Finally I got this sewing book because it has no patterns, and one project I need to make for my new set of crochet hooks. I had a wonderful time at B. Dalton, too, so we might have to visit that mall again before 2034. :)
