Round 2

Since I didn't win any of my wannabuts last time I bid, I'm trying again. These are items I want to thrift but only for a set minimum price. This brooch lot is bigger and nicer than the one I just lost, so I went a little higher with a max bid of $14.00. Lately jewelry is really attracting bidders so I'm not very optimistic. For this vintage linen lot I bid $10.00 as my max. These lots are 50/50; sometimes they get no bids and other times they attract bidding wars and last-minute snipers. I doubt I will win this big yarn lot for $10.00, but you never know. Stay tuned to the blog to see how I do. :)

Here are the results of my latest round of wannabuts, where I bid on thrifted items I want but only for a minimum bid, which this time is again $10.00. This lovely vintage brooch lot would make a neat collage picture, although I didn't think I would win them -- and I didn't. Winning bid was $43.00. I was hoping these three framed needlework pictures could find a new home with me. Nope, I was outbid at $11.00. Sticking to my $10.00 limit meant not bidding again (so hard sometimes, especially when it's just a dollar over!) This 9.2 pound lot of yarn has colors I need, but big lots are attracting lots of bidders. I was also outbid on this one, which went for $16.00. Oh, well, it was fun to try! Here We Go Again

It's time to play another round of wannabuts, where I bid on thrifted items I want but only for a minimum bid, which this time is again $10.00. I'd like to make a collage picture out of vintage pins for the holidays, so I decided to try for this lot of brooches. I probably won't win them, as large brooch lots tend to attract a lot of bidders, but you never know. These three framed needlework pictures really charmed me, and I'd love to own them, but only if I can get all three for ten bucks. There are several colors of yarn that I need in this 9.2 pound lot. Yarn has become more desirable to bidders now that we're approaching the fall and winter holidays, so it may go for more than my minimum bid. Stay tuned to the blog to see the results. :) Image credit: all of the images in this post came from the original auction listings at ShopGoodwill.com.

It's time to find out how I did with my latest round of wannabuts: thrifted items that I want but only for a minimum price, which in this case was $10.00. This clothing lot attracted a group of bidders early on, and ended up going for $26.85 to the highest, which was not me. No one else bothered bidding on this vintage edition of The Sketch Book by Washington Irving, so I won the auction! I'm thrilled to own a copy. This yarn lot went for $12.00 to another bidder, but that's okay. I got one of my wannabuts! Image credit: All of the pics in this post came from the original auction listings at ShopGoodwill.com.

Trio of Wannabuts

I'm playing another round of wannabuts this week, which is when I bid on thrifted items I want, but only at a minimum amount. This week's budget is $10.00, which I think is a good price for this lot of at least eleven articles of brand new clothing in my size, still in their shipping bags. At less than a dollar a piece, how can I resist the mystery? I love books, especially old ones, so this vintage copy of Washington Irving's The Sketch Book (actually titled The Sketch Book of Geoffrey Crayon, Gent. ) caught my eye at once. I don't know how old it is, but it appears to be from the late 19th or early 20th century. This short story collection contains two of his most famous works: Rip Van Winkle and The Legend of Sleepy Hollow , so I would love to own it -- but only for $10.00, given the condition. I can count 25 skeins in this lot of yarn, which has lots of white (a color I always need) and some pretty blues and autumn variegated yarns. I see that th...

Le Wannabut Quilt

The quilt I got for $7.99 during the last round of Wannabuts arrived; let's see if it's as pretty as the pics. It's a really big quilt -- a couple inches short of a queen size, from the look of it. I think the patchwork is really charming. I'd say this was made back in the seventies or eighties. It's actually quite well made, likely out of polyester clothing scraps (which is also why the colors are still nice and bright. Polyester generally doesn't fade.) There is no batting, and the backing was probably a sheet the maker repurposed. I'm not a fan of polyester fabric, but I repaired a quilt very similar to this one many times over the years for my mother. A friend of hers who was wheelchair bound hand-sewed the entire quilt, making it from scraps of her own old clothes. Mom loved it and always asked me to fix it whenever the hand stitching came loose and the seams split open. At first repairing that old quilt was a hassle, but after...

As I mentioned yesterday, I'm playing another round of wannabuts (things I want to thrift but only for the minimum price) on three different quilts at ShopGoodwill.com which I would like to repair, refurbish and add to my collection. This scrappy quilt reminded me of one my mother owned; did I win the quilt? Yep, I got it for $7.99 with no challengers. This row by row outdoors themed quilt needs some repairs, but I was outbid right away on it. The winning bid went for $20.00, which was a bit much considering how much damage there is to be fixed. I collect double wedding ring quilts, but I don't have a green and white one. The bidding for this ended up in a last minute sniper-fest, in which I did not participate, and the winning bid ended up being $21.00. One out of three isn't a bad outcome, and I'm happy with the quilt I did win. Stay tuned to see what it looks like when it arrives.

Wannabuts Results

Let's see how I did on the latest round of wannabuts, or thrift items that I want but only if I can get them for the minimum bid. This lot of vintage linens had in it a vintage tablecloth I fell in love with, but I was willing to pay only $10.00 for it. Alas, other linen lovers swarmed, and the final bid was a whopping $56.00. I haven't tried doing latch hook in years, and this kit would have made a nice big rug, too. Did I get it for $10.00? Nope. The final bid ended up being $23.01 (which is a pretty good price, just not what I wanted to pay.) Taste of Home cookbooks are fun to read, but I wanted these three for no more than $13.00. As it turns out, I got them for $12.99! Really delighted about that, and looking forward to discovering some new recipes.

More Wannabuts

Yes, it's another round of wannabuts, or thrift items that I want but only if I can get them for the minimum bid. This lot of vintage linens is in wonderful shape, and includes a vintage tablecloth I fell in love with at first sight. Can I win it? There were a bunch of these latch hook kits up for bid in December, a craft I haven't done in years. It makes a big rug, too. Will I get it for the price I want to pay? I really like Taste of Home cookbooks, so this trio caught my eye. Even the vintage variety are fun to read, and they sometimes give me new ideas for our meals. Will I get them for the minimum bid? Stay tuned to the blog to find out. :)
