Again and Again

I'm currently rewatching My Little Happiness, a romance c-drama that I've already seen twice, and I have to admit it never gets old.

From my first review: the romance begins with childhood friends Cong Rong (Xing Fei) and Wen Shaoqing (Tang Xiaotian). Rong is a fiesty little girl who can't stand seeing shy, chubby Shaoqing being bullied, and stands up for him. They quickly become best friends, but then Rong's father passes away, and she leaves the school, promising to return and see Shaoqing again, but never does. Twenty or so years later, a very short but quite cute Rong returns from abroad to China for an internship at a law firm, and is assigned to the hospital where the towering and now very handsome Shaoqing works as a neurosurgeon.

There's a lot going on in this drama, from Rong's mom not wanting her to become a lawyer to Shaoqing's poet uncle being unable to move on after being dumped by his first love. Rong also has a rich best friend who is a one-woman wrecking ball, and of course falls for Shaoqing's quiet, thoughtful uncle. There are two rivals for the leads as well, one on each side, and these subplots were handled really well -- always there, but not muddling the story.

The romance happily always takes center stage, and has a surprising sensuality to it for a state-censored production. This is mainly thanks to Tang Xiaotian's smoldering intensity as the hero, and a really surprising amount of skinship throughout the series. There's also the visual surprise provided by the mismatched heights of the leads -- Rong is about two feet shorter than Shaoqing, which always makes them interesting to watch together. If you like realistic kissing scenes, this is the one to see.

I think the reason I like rewatching this drama so much is because unlike most of what's being produced now it's just so enjoyable I'm happy to go back to it. It will probably become one of my favorite rewatches, like Healer, Happiness and The King Eternal Monarch. Available on Viki.com.

Wild Ride

Along with the Gods: The Two Worlds is an epic, dazzling film that hurls you into the Korean version of the afterlife while showcasing some of the most impressive special effects I've ever seen in any movie. The story begins with the death of firefighter Kim Ja-Hong (Cha Tae-hyun) who jumps out of a burning building with a child in his arms. The kid lives, but he dies at the scene. Two strangers inform him that he has passed away right on schedule, and toss him into a vortex that takes him to the world of the afterlife, where he meets his three guardians: Gang-rim (Ha Jung-woo), Haewonmak (Ju Ji-hoon) and Lee Deok-choon (Kim Hyang-gi). At the gates of the afterlife Ja-Hong learns that he is considered a paragon (an exemplary person who lived a noble and self-sacrificing life) and is eligible to be reincarnated -- but there's a catch. Progress

My guy is back home safe, sound and exhausted. I think he just realized he's over seventy now. :) I didn't finish a sewing project while he was gone, but I did make some progress on the beach bag. I've tacked down all the fabric elements on top of the old backing fabric I quilted. Time to break out the embroidery thread box and have some fun.
