Stitch Play

At last, I found what I was looking for -- Lynn Krawczyk's The Hand-Stitched Surface, which is a playground of a book for people who love to hand stitch.

If you want to grab my attention, humor is best. The author opens the book with: "I wrote this book in fifteen minutes. No, really, I did." (She didn't.) I like starting out with a chuckle. What she presents after a nicely written, realistic intro is a detailed collection of techniques, tools and tricks that anyone can easily follow if they want to learn or develop their hand-stitching.

What's different about this book is that the author applies hand stitching to mixed media rather than textiles only. There are eight fabric and seven paper projects to try out, and I'd say nearly all of them are beginner friendly.

While informative and beautifully photographed, this book doesn't take itself too seriously, particularly in some of the projects (a frayed fabric necklace isn't on anyone's fashion list.) There are some great techniques to learn, especially with the non-textile projects (I have hand-stitched paper, and it's not as easy as you think. Paper tears.) Mostly it's a fun book, and I think everyone could use a little of that -- especially now.

Love Means This

Invested in a couple of hand-dyed bundles from one of my favorite fabric artists. This one said "Make me into something for Valentine's Day." So I went for a quilted and embellished tote. I kept thinking about what love means to me as I worked on it. Here's the finished tote. Although I was tempted to embellish with beads and pins, I got sick and only felt well enough to do a little stitching every night. As I worked I thought about how often love seems disappointing to us, especially when it fails to live up to our expectations. But now that I've experienced love in many forms, I can say that it's made me a better person than I might have been without it. Love is a precious thing, and should be appreciated in all its forms. Wild Ride

Along with the Gods: The Two Worlds is an epic, dazzling film that hurls you into the Korean version of the afterlife while showcasing some of the most impressive special effects I've ever seen in any movie. The story begins with the death of firefighter Kim Ja-Hong (Cha Tae-hyun) who jumps out of a burning building with a child in his arms. The kid lives, but he dies at the scene.
