To start my slow stitched art quilt I cut this piece of hand-dyed recycled fabric into four equal pieces.
I then pinned and began stitching other fabric pieces on top of the first panel.
I think this will be an abstract piece, but I really have no plan to do anything but stitch in the moment.
Improvising a quilt used to make me nervous, but making those mini quilts last year for my journal helped me get over that. Now it's just about enjoying the process and not worrying about anything else. Which will be good for me, of course -- my brain looks like my art thread box these days; rather chaotic and scattered. :)

I LOVE this! I don't have much of an imagination for this kind of thing. Crazy quilt, yes, but that still follows a pattern. This is so cool. As to your thread box and brain? Yeah, I know the feeling...
