Frustrations

I'm falling behind on several projects, which makes me annoyed with myself. My progress on the one-pound challenge quilt has been frustratingly slow. I'm mired down with spring cleaning the last two rooms, which are probably going to take until summer arrives. My guy has been busy pressure cleaning the outside of the house, so I've been taking care of the dogs solo, including their long walks, which takes up more of my time. Then I got sick for a couple days, and that set me back on everything. All of this stuff combines to drag me down.

On the upside? I've finally gotten into the rhythm of writing again for my latest work novel, but I had a lousy couple of days with that. I did finish our hurricane prep, and now have everything in place to weather another storm season, but I still wonder if it's enough. I'm constantly second-guessing myself.

Although I have a good routine established with housework and the day job, sometimes I can't get into it. I know some of the culprits are lack of sleep (I had a bad time last week with insomnia), physical limitations (I'm definitely feeling my age and afflictions more keenly these days) and general blahness. Like everyone I get tired of all the demands on me. I'm really sick of the internet, too. All this doom and glooming and hatred makes me sick.

How do I combat all this aggravation? I'm making myself write every day in a kind of gratitude journal about how fortunate I am, and what does make me happy in my daily life (i.e. reaching my wordcount quota, the pups, a nice walk.) I'm cooking up a storm, and in the last couple of weeks I've discovered three new delicious recipes. I made oatmeal raisin cookies that are safe for me to eat that my guy actually loved. I'm fighting the frustration with positivity and creation, and it's working to slowly pull me out of this blue period.

I'm sorry about all of this, but it sounds like you're managing and moving forward and that's a good thing! I've been conspicuously absent of late and I apologize. A week ago this past Wednesday, we said goodbye to Murphy. It's been heartbreaking and especially depressing for me, not just because I adored him to bits, but because I'm home alone, well, the cat is here, but...cat! and this is the first time in thirty years there hasn't been a dog in the house. I can't seem to stop crying. So I'm sorry I've been quiet of late. I'll be better. I'm getting a bit better every day. Love you, my friend.

Lynn, have you tried one of those sound machines for sleeping? Every so often I'm so wound up I can't relax even with sleep aids. I went to youtube and found a soft thunderstorm sound that lasts for 10 hours. If all else fails, that usually does the trick. There are apps too that give you white noise that help you sleep. Rain usually does it for me.

Fell Off the Wagon

I did cut up that plastic dollar tote to make into something stronger, but got caught up with work and set it aside. Then last night some hand-dyed silk and pretty threads called my name, and, well . . . Felt SO good to do some handwork, except my neck began hurting about an hour into it. I tried changing the way I sit and work, but it's pretty obvious that the doc is right.

T-minus Day

This was our little Thanksgiving dinner last year, when it was just the three of us. Time keeps whittling down my favorite holiday; this year it will be just me and my guy, and we likely won't even have a turkey.* That will be a first in 35 years. I feel about Thanksgiving the way other people do about Christmas, and while it's a lot of work it's my favorite holiday. Of all the Thanksgivings I've had in the past sixty years, only three were truly terrible: one when I was a kid that I don't talk about (#1 most miserable); the time I roasted two turkeys together and hosted fifteen people whom I cooked for and served with zero help (the largest and #2 most miserable); and the one I spent in basic training (the #3 most miserable.) I have no pictures of any of those, thank heavens. In addition to doing all the cooking I'm the one who takes all the pictures, washes all the dishes and puts away all the leftovers. I suppose no one else cares because to them it...

Old Loves & Such

My guy kindly bought me my favorite Chinese take out the other night, and my fortune cookie offered up an interesting story starter: This sounds sweet, right? Only the first thing I thought of was an old love coming back from the dead . . . . must be October. In other lovely news, my favorite hand-dyed thread artist, Lorraine from Colour Complements , is moving her business from Etsy to her own web site. Many of my favorite sellers on Etsy are leaving due to the whole "free shipping" coercion debacle, which has also soured me on the site. To show support I did a little shopping at Lorraine's web site and got in these: I love her threads and trims; you simply can't buy anything like them anywhere. Her work makes my specialty thread box look like a treasure chest: At night I'm spending just as hour working on quilting the scrap project runner, and I'm making slow progress: I'll keep quilting the runner while I try to decide on a design for t...
