Shiny

As a fan of ombre and anything shiny I thought I might try out some Edmar viscose embroidery threads this summer. Like perle cotton these threads come in a variety of sizes, and the sheen is remarkable. I've seen them used mostly in Brazilian style dimensional floral embroidery. This past week I've done two pieces with the two skeins on the far right here.

Anyone who has ever sewn with viscose threads knows how they slither, kink and fray easily, so it's best to work with shorter lengths to help maintain control. Edmar threads seem stronger than the other rayon threads I've tried in the past, and they're very silky to the touch. What I liked about them most was the very pretty finish they give to a piece.

The color variation can be anything from subtle to bold; the center stitching on this piece is all the same skein of thread.

Edmar threads also strongly resemble some of the silk embroidery thread that was used back at the turn of the 20th century for crazy quilt embroidery; they have the same high luster and can be as thin, depending on the size you choose. I'm looking forward to trying these out on some crazy quilted projects in the future.
