Twice now I've seen what looks like a finger sticking out of the ground in the yard near our woodpile. It's almost always got flies on it
Turns out it's a mushroom, probably some variety of mutinus elegans, aka the elegant stinkhorn (it looks just like them minus the icky top.)
Although it's not poisonous, it creeps me out.

Definitely one of the Stinkhorn family. There's no top on it because the flies eat it. Don't touch it. It really does stink like death which is what attracts them. I get them in the late, late summer/early fall (depending on the weather) in my front flowerbeds. I steer clear of them and don't dare let the dog out with us those few days. He does not have a discerning palate...
I wonder if it's related to dead man's toes. Now that one is really creepy. I saw one once coming out of a compost pile.
